Poroshenko signs law on national security

President Petro Poroshenko has signed the law on the national security of Ukraine.

The signing ceremony took place during a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) on July 5, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“This document confirms Ukraine’s course towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration,” Poroshenko stated at the beginning of the NSDC meeting.

He recalled that the law, in particular, ensures Ukraine’s defense sector transition to the rules, principles and standards of NATO.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada approved the president’s bill on the national security of Ukraine on June 21. A total of 248 MPs voted for the draft law.

The bill regulates the fundamentals and principles of state policy in the field of national security and defense, taking into account the acquisition of membership in the EU and NATO, the mechanisms for improving democratic civilian control over the security and defense sector, the system of management of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in particular, the division of tasks, functions, powers, responsibilities and accountability of the management of the Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces etc.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy signed the law on June 27 and sent it to the President for his signature.
