Canada's support for Ukraine sends signal of deterrence to Russia - defense minister

Active cooperation between Ukraine and Canada helps deter Russia's aggressive behavior, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan has said.

He stated this at a meeting with the Ukrainian community, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Through our trade agreement, military partnership, cultural ties and cooperation with NATO, Canada sends a very strong signal of deterrence to Russia," Sajjan said.

He said that Canada had deliberately placed its troops in Latvia in order to ensure that the events in Donbas could not repeat in the Baltic States.

According to him, a strong Ukraine is the best illustration of the failure of Russia's actions.

At the NATO summit in 2016, Canada agreed to send its troops and equipment to Latvia and lead a multinational battalion, which currently stays in the Baltic States to contain possible Russian aggression.
