A court hearing in the case of the murder of linguist Iryna Farion was held today at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv.

Ukrinform's correspondent reported this.

During today's session, a witness was supposed to be questioned. However, due to the absence of one of his lawyers, Volodymyr Voroniak, the accused, Zinchenko, requested that the court proceedings be adjourned.

Zinchenko's lawyer, Ihor Sulyma, who was present at the hearing, supported his client's motion.

For their part, the prosecution claims that the defense is deliberately delaying the proceedings and abusing the right to defense.

As previously reported, the attack on Iryna Farion took place on July 19, 2024, in Lviv — a man shot her and fled. She later died in the hospital.

On July 25, the suspected perpetrator was detained in Dnipro. On July 26, the Halytskyi District Court of Lviv chose a preventive measure for the 18-year-old resident of Dnipro, Zinchenko, in the form of detention without the right to bail.

Farion's daughter and the victims' legal representatives demanded a reclassification of the charges – replacing Part 1 of the article on intentional murder with Part 2, which provides for the possibility of life imprisonment.

On December 26, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported that the suspect in Farion's murder case had his charges reclassified as intentional murder related to the performance of civic duty, motivated by national intolerance, as well as illegal handling of weapons.

Iryna Farion (1964–2024, Lviv) was a Ukrainian linguist, educator, political and public figure, language activist, publicist, and blogger. She held a Doctor of Philology degree, was a professor, and served as a Member of Parliament of Ukraine in the 7th convocation (2012–2014).
