In Rivne region, 72-year-old man kills five IDPs with axe and hammer

In the Rivne region, a 72-year-old man killed five people in a place where internally displaced persons were living.

According to Ukrinform, the Communications Department of the Rivne Regional Police reported this.

On Tuesday, February 10, at around 4:15 a.m., the police received a report from a social worker that her clients from the village of Sudobychi, who live in a disused school, heard screams in the corridor.

The police established that at around 4:10 a.m., a domestic dispute arose between a 72-year-old native of the Donetsk region and other residents in the shared living quarters of internally displaced persons, which escalated into a fight. During the clash, the man began striking five people with a hammer and an axe.

Five people died on the spot from their injuries, including two men aged 60 and 68, two women aged 81 and 78 from the Donetsk region, and a 56-year-old woman from the Kirovograd region.

Patrol police officers were the first to arrive at the scene and identified the attacker.

Subsequently, investigators, under the prosecutor's office's procedural guidance, detained the 72-year-old perpetrator.

Investigative teams from the Dubno District Police Department and the Main Directorate of the National Police in the region, as well as a forensic laboratory, are working at the scene.

The Dubno District Prosecutor's Office and the Rivne Regional Prosecutor's Office are conducting the proceedings.

Investigators have launched a pre-trial investigation into the incident under Article 115, Part 2, Clause 1 (intentional murder of two or more persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The decision on notifying the suspect of the charges and selecting a preventive measure is pending.
