Zelensky calls for increased pressure on Russia after drone strikes house in Romania
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need to increase pressure on Russia following a Russian drone strike on a house in Romania and an attack on the Odesa region.
According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian leader wrote about this on social media X in response to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s reaction to the incident in Romania, in which she stated that “Russia has crossed yet another line.”
“It is indeed necessary to step up pressure on Russia so that this war is not dragged out or expanded. Last night, the Russians carried out a deliberate strike on our southern region – Odesa region, which borders Romania. This was yet another cynical attack on civilian infrastructure in our cities and in our waters, targeting civilian container ships,” Zelensky noted.
According to him, one of the drones—essentially an analogue of the “Shahed”—also struck a residential building in Romania.
Zelensky wished the victims a speedy recovery and expressed Ukraine’s readiness to support Romania in any way necessary under these circumstances.
“We count on the European Union’s new sanctions measures against Russia to be truly strong and to make Russia feel that its strikes mean significant losses for Russia itself. That would be fair. Thank you to everyone helping protect life,” the President added.
As reported by Ukrinform, in the city of Galați in eastern Romania, near the border with Ukraine, a drone crashed into a high-rise residential building. A 14-year-old boy and a woman, who is in critical condition, were injured in the incident.
In response to the incident, several NATO fighter jets were scrambled over the Galati area.
Commenting on the incident, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Russia’s war has crossed yet another line. According to her, the EU will continue to strengthen its security and deterrence measures, especially on the eastern border, and “will continue to increase pressure on Russia.”
