CinC Syrskyi: AFU are transitioning to asymmetric warfare strategy

During a meeting of the EU Military Committee at the level of Chiefs of Defense (Chiefs of General Staff), Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi provided an update on the situation at the front and the needs of the Ukrainian army, and highlighted the main tasks of the Defense Forces.

Syrskyi reported this on Facebook, according to Ukrinform.

"At the meeting of the EU Military Committee, I spoke about the operational situation on the battlefield in Ukraine, which remains difficult. At the same time, based on the results of both last year and this spring, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have prevented the enemy from achieving the strategic objectives of the so-called special military operation. Given limited resources, to effectively counter a significantly larger enemy, we are trying to shift from a ‘war of attrition’ to an asymmetric strategy. “Our main tasks are to halt the enemy’s advance and effectively counterattack, strike at the Russians’ rear, including deep within their territory, and protect our skies,” Syrskyi stated.

According to him, a significant portion of the enemy’s losses are inflicted by Ukrainian unmanned systems units across all three domains—air, land, and sea. The average number of enemy personnel eliminated by a single UAS strike crew per month is 15.

At the meeting, the Commander-in-Chief outlined the Defense Forces’ needs for weapons, ammunition, and military equipment. “As before, this primarily includes air defense, missile defense, and missiles for these systems,” he noted.

Syrskyi also emphasized the importance of launching a Ukraine-EU Drone Alliance, which will enable the improvement of joint capabilities in the production of unmanned systems.

The Commander-in-Chief thanked his European colleagues for supporting Ukraine in repelling the large-scale Russian invasion.

“I highly appreciate the efforts to develop cooperation between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the EU’s military component. After all, the Ukrainian military is, in essence, defending Europe’s eastern flank. Through our joint efforts, we are strengthening the security of the entire continent and reinforcing the foundation for a stable and peaceful future for Europe,” he emphasized.

Syrskyi noted the EU’s decisions to strengthen Europe’s defense, specifically the “ReArm Europe” initiative, Security for Europe (SAFE), and the European Defense Industrial Program (EDIP), and expressed gratitude for the opportunity for Ukraine to participate in them.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also expressed gratitude for the decision to extend the implementation of the European aid package for Ukraine for 2026–2027, for European contributions to the Priority List of Ukraine’s Needs (PURL) initiative, and for the activities of the EU Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM).

“The European Union has been the largest collective provider of aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Through joint efforts, we will be able to significantly reduce Russia’s resources for continuing the war and create conditions under which it will be forced to cease its aggression against Ukraine and against a united Europe,” he emphasized.

As reported by Ukrinform, earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi participated in a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council at the level of commanders-in-chief of the armed forces at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
