Zelensky supports Merz’s idea of Christmas truce

President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he supports German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's idea to introduce a Christmas truce.

The head of state announced this while answering questions from journalists, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

"Friedrich did indeed propose this idea. And today he announced it both officially and during our conversations. The United States supports this idea. As president, I certainly support this idea. I believe that an energy truce is also normal, and we will support any ceasefire. We support both Europe and the United States of America in their steps to end the war," Zelensky said, responding to a question from a Ukrinform correspondent.

He noted that many things “in this sense depend on Russia's political will.” “But I would like to say separately that many things also depend on our work on the documents,” the President noted.

As reported, on December 15, during a conversation with the media together with Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that there is now a small but real chance for a ceasefire in Ukraine. When asked whether a truce could be achieved before Christmas, Merz replied that it depended entirely on Russia. He called on the Russian side to stop its terror against the peaceful Ukrainian population, at least during the holidays, which could eventually lead to the start of negotiations on a genuine truce.
