Russians trying to use weather conditions to advance near Vovchansk – military spox

Russian forces are attempting to advance in and around Vovchansk, taking advantage of current weather conditions.

Viktor Trehubov, Head of Communications of the Joint Forces grouping, said this on air, Ukrinform reports.

“In the Vovchansk, or, as it is officially called, Southern Slobozhanshchyna sector, the Russians are actively trying to advance directly inside the town and around it. These attempts are being thwarted by Ukrainian defenders, but the problem is that the town itself is destroyed. Moreover, over the last two days, heavy fog has been helping groups of Russian infantry infiltrate,” Trehubov said.

He added that due to the weather conditions, almost no “wing-type” drones or tactical aviation are being used in this area.

In other sectors, including the Kupiansk area, Ukraine’s Defense Forces are holding back the enemy. According to the spokesman, Ukrainian forces currently control the southern and central districts of Kupiansk, while the northern districts are held by Russians who entered them in early November. Ukrainian defenders have managed to completely cut the enemy off from resupply, which had been maintained through drone airdrops.

“Right now, Russian forces in Kupiansk are in a rather difficult situation,” Trehubov said.

According to him, the Russians continue to apply pressure on the approaches to Kupiansk, where they can still maintain some logistics, but these attempts “are not very successful.”

The spokesman also noted that Russian troops are trying to cross the Oskil river using small boats, but such targets “are quite easy to hit.”

“So as of now, it is rather difficult for them to move around there, but if the river freezes, it may become easier. However, we still don’t know what the exact winter conditions will be,” Trehubov added.

He noted that in the Lyman and Velykyi Burluk sectors, the enemy forces are also attempting to advance but are being repelled.
