Seizure of Ukraine’s ZNPP by Russia demands “fundamental reaction” from int’l community - Zelensky

President Volodymyr Zelensky on the anniversary of the capture by Russian invaders of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant called on the world to deliver a “particularly fundamental reaction” to Russia’s actions.

Zelensky posted the corresponding tweet on March 5, Ukrinform reports.

He recalled that a year ago, “the terrorist state first in human history took a nuclear power plant hostage. Zaporizhzhia NPP. Russia fired at the plant, it is shelling our cities hiding at the nuclear power plant, turned the territory of the ZNPP into a de facto military training ground.”

“This particularly cynical form of terror requires a particularly principled response from the world. We need global sanctions against Russia’s nuclear industry, we need the immediate return of full Ukrainian control over the ZNPP,” the president wrote.

Zelensky thanked the IAEA for cooperation for the sake of restoring security.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Russian troops captured the ZNPP on the night of March 4, 2022. Having deployed on the site of the plant their military equipment and ammunition, the invaders have also been shelling both the surrounding area and the NPP premises, destroying power transmission lines and repeatedly causing an external power feed to shut off.

At the end of 2022, Zelensky stated that there are nearly 500 Russian invaders stationed at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
