Spain can send up to ten Leopard tanks to Ukraine - PM

Spain will soon decide on the possibility of supplying Ukraine with up to ten Leopard 2 A4 tanks.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday, February 23, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"As the Minister of Defense said yesterday, we will send six Leopard 2 A4 tanks to Ukraine and in the coming weeks we will see if we can increase this number to ten. Of course, we will help Ukraine's military learn how to use these tanks," Sanchez said.

Commenting on possible assistance in protecting the Ukrainian sky, he said that President Zelensky had asked for this assistance, but Spain should study this issue and talk to its allies about it.

Sanchez also added that the assistance that Spain, as a member of the EU and NATO, provides to Ukraine is aimed at protecting Ukraine from Russia.

"Ukraine has never posed any threat to Russia. We are helping a country that is defending its people who were attacked. We must understand that Putin violates all fundamental laws, violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine, therefore this struggle is absolutely legal, and it must receive our joint assistance," Sanchez said.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on February 22 that Madrid planned to send six Leopard 2 A4 tanks to Ukraine.
