Japan to put sanctions on Putin, support Russia's disconnection from SWIFT

Japan has joined western countries to block many Russian banks from the Swift payment system.

A relevant statement was made by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday, The Guardian reports with reference to Reuters.

Kishida added Japan will put sanctions on Russian president Vladimir Putin and extend $100m in emergency humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Japan’s PM condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine, saying it undermines the foundation of the international order.

On Saturday, people demonstrated in Tokyo to protest against Putin’s invasion.

The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for four days. On February 24, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. Martial law was imposed. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization.
