Institute of Mass Information: Ukrinform, Liga.net, Ukrayinska Pravda provide news feed of highest quality among Ukrainian media outlets

Ukrinform
National News Agency “Ukrinform” tops the ranking of the Ukrainian media outlets providing the news feed of the highest quality.

The second position in the ranking is occupied by Liga.net, Ukrayinska Pravda, and Cenzor.net Ukrainian online media outlets. Novoye Vremya and 112.ua news websites ranked third. The worst indicators were shown by Obozrevatel and Segodnya.ua media outlets.

These are the results of the study conducted by the Institute of Mass Information in November 2016. The experts analyzed 15 popular Ukrainian online media outlets, assessing their compliance with three professional journalism standards: the balance of opinions and points of view, accuracy, separating facts from commentaries, and the level of socially important articles in the news feed.

According to the study results, about 76% of the materials in the news feed deal with the issues, which are important for the society. Ukrinform, Liga.net, Ukrayinska Pravda, and Cenzor.net contain the greater share of such materials – 97%. The entertainment content is mostly published by Obozrevatel (60%), Korrespondent, and Segodnya.ua (45% each) media outlets.

The standard of accuracy is violated more often than others – an average of 16%,

the balance of opinions and points of view is violated in every tenth piece of news, the facts are not separated from commentaries in 6% of the pieces of news.

TSN.ua (97%), Liga.net, Novoye Vremya, 24.ua, Segodnya.ua, and 112.ua media outlets are best in compliance with the balance (95%). The poorest balance was observed in RBC-Ukraine and Strana.ua – respectively 20 and 18% of pieces of news are unbalanced.

The highest level of compliance with the standard of accuracy was recorded in the news feed of Ukrinform – all pieces of news, which were monitored, contained the sources of information and those sources were sufficiently reliable. Liga.net, Ukrayinska Pravda, and Cenzor.net are also rather accurate – 92%. The lowest level of compliance with this standard was recorded in Segodnya.ua – 57%.

Ukrainian media outlets almost do not break the standard of separating facts from commentaries. Ukrinform, TSN.ua, Ukrayinska Pravda, and Cenzor.net show 100% compliance with this standard.

During the study, the articles with the signs of paid journalism were found in eight media outlets out of fifteen, namely in Obozrevatel, UNIAN, LB.ua, Cenzor.net, Korrespondent, Segodnya.ua, RBC -Ukraine, 24.tv.

The experts analyzed a total of 15 Ukrainian online media outlets: Obozrevatel, UNIAN, LB.ua, Liga.net, Ukrayinska Pravda, Cenzor.net, Korrespondent, Ukrinform, Segodnya.ua, 112.ua, RBC-Ukraine, 24.ua, TSN.ua, Novoye Vremya, and Strana.ua.
