Russia blocks UN Security Council statement on Syria airstrikes

Ukrinform
Russia has blocked a UN Security Council statement that condemns the air strikes hitting a refugee camp in the Idlib province in Syria.

An Ukrinform correspondent learned this from Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations.

"Russia has blocked a draft press statement in the UN Security Council regarding the airstrikes on refugee camps in the Syrian province of Idlib on May 5," the mission said.

The Russian side has explained it considered the situation "unclear."

The draft press statement of the Security Council expressed deep concerns about the reports of civilian deaths in the Syrian refugee camps on May 5. The document urged all sides to respect the norms of international humanitarian law and human rights, and to immediately start investigation of the airstrikes.
