Canada marked the National Internment Remembrance Day which for those persons affected  during World War II on Wednesday.

The Ukrinform own Ottawa correspondent reports that resolution to commemorate this day was adopted only last year.

"On this day we commemorate the victims of the first Canadian internment operations (1914-1920). It was a forced internment of 8.579 Ukrainians and other Europeans who were declared as "enemy aliens" and exiled to the 24 internment camps throughout Canada ", the Ukrainian Canadian Congress reported.

The organization stated that the only basis for internment was the nationality of a person.

"Men, women and children suffered in the first Canadian internment operations not because of their faults, but for who they were and from where they came from. We remember all victims of this unjust action on this day."
