West finds itself in situation of really having no idea what to do about Moscow’s adventure in Syria – expert
West finds itself in situation of really having no idea what to do about Moscow’s adventure in Syria.
Amanda Paul, Senior Policy Analyst of the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels said this in exclusive comments to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"Putin’s intentions are crystal clear. He wants to strengthen the Assad regime because this guarantees Russia maintaining a foothold in the region. Russia does not want to find itself in a situation where it loses the foothold it has there while the Americans and others in the West maintain their bases in the Gulf. This is why the Russian air campaign is targeting all those against Assad," she said.
According to the expert, Russians may say they are only targeting jihadi groups and yes there are a lot of jihadi groups on the ground but the Free Syrian Army is not one of them and so far the FSA seems to have been the main target of Russian air strikes.
"Moreover it seems that Russia is supported to some degree by Tehran and Baghdad with the establishment of coordination in Baghdad last week and reports of increased number of Iranian militia arriving in Syria last night. And it comes as no surprise that yet again the West finds itself in situation of really having no idea what to do about Moscow’s new adventure," Amanda Paul added.
