McCain rejects observe elections in 'imaginary' LPR

Ukrinform
KYIV, September 15 /Ukrinform/. U.S. Senator John McCain has turned down the invitation by the militants' leader Ihor Plotnytsky to monitor local elections in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.

This is reported by the Voice of America.

"While I do not typically monitor the elections of imaginary countries, I am grateful for this unique invitation If the so-called 'Luhansk People's Republic' is interested in democratic elections, I suggest its adherents put down their weapons and participate in the next round of elections in a free and united Ukraine," Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said.

McCain has repeatedly advocated that the United States should more actively support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian-backed separatists in the east of the country.

The European leaders are unlikely to recognize the illegitimate upcoming elections in the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine, which are to take place in parallel with the elections in Ukraine in October.
