Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People has decided to boycott the referendum on state status of Crimea, the e-Crimea news agency reported on Thursday.

KYIV, March 6 /Ukrinform/. Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People has decided to boycott the referendum on state status of Crimea, the e-Crimea news agency reported on Thursday.

"Chairman of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov ... explained the decision as there are doubts the legality of the referendum,” reads a statement in connection with today's decision by the Supreme Council of Crimea on the peninsula's accession to Russia and conduct of a referendum on March 16.

According to Chubarov, "in circumstances where the troops are on the streets, amid absolute full legal bacchanalia, the referendum, especially in the absence of legislation - these are actions to further destabilize the situation in Crimea."
