Belarus reports Melnyk's arrest

KYIV, August 16 /Ukrinform/. Former Rector of the National University of the State Tax Service of Ukraine Petro Melnyk has been detained at the Verkhny Terebezhov checkpoint in Belarus and transferred to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Tyzhden.ua has reported, citing the chief of the Pinsk border detachment of Belarus on work with the media, Mikhail But-Gusaim.

In particular, he confirmed that Melnyk had crossed the Belarusian border. "He was detained and brought to administrative liability for violating the rules of stay in Belarus without proper documents, namely without his passport. And he was transferred to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine," But-Gusaim said.

As reported, Melnyk was detained on July 27 while receiving a bribe.

On August 9, he escaped house arrest after removing an electronic tracking bracelet. Media claimed that Melnyk could leave for Belarus, Russia or Transdniestria.

On August 13, he was put on the interstate wanted list, and on August 14, he was placed on the international wanted list.

The Gazeta.ua online newspaper reported later that Melnyk had left for Belarus.

According to the newspaper's sources, the Belarusian side has not received Melnyk and sent him back to Ukraine and after that he disappeared in an unknown direction.
