The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine condemns the decision of the Moscow City Court to reject a petition of appeal submitted by a lawyer of Ukrainian citizen, Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko, who was illegally arrested in Moscow, against the previous decision of the Lefortovo District Court on taking Sushchenko into custody, the ministry’s press service reports.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses strong protest regarding decision of the Moscow City Court to dismiss a petition of appeal of a lawyer of illegally detained in Russia citizen of Ukraine Roman Sushchenko in relation to the decision of the Lefortovo District Court in the city of Moscow dated October 1, 2016 on the arrest of the Ukrainian national,” reads the report.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that the case of journalist Sushchenko from Ukraine’s National News Agency Ukrinform, who was illegally detained in Russia under politically motivated and fabricated charges in espionage,” has become another notorious evidence that there is no legal system and the right for fair justice in the Russian Federation.

“Denial of access to the court room of the Ukrainian consular official causes a particular indignation. This is another evidence of Russia’s biased and unfair court,” reads the report.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the Russian Federation to immediately release Roman Sushchenko and other citizens of Ukraine who have become hostages of Russia’s aggressive policy and to ensure their return to Ukraine.

As reported, on October 27, the Moscow City Court rejected an appeal against the arrest of Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko. The defense wanted to change the measure of restraint from custody in the Lefortovo District Court to another one, for example house arrest.

Ukrinform correspondent in France Roman Sushchenko was arrested in Moscow on September 30, where he arrived on a private visit. He was accused of “espionage”, allegedly being a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate denied allegations of Russian Federal Security Service.

The court ruled at its closed hearing on October 1 to arrest the journalist for two months – until November 30.

On October 7, the Russian Federation officially charged the Ukrainian journalist with spying. Sushchenko denies any guilt.
