OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović has appealed to Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov regarding the detention of Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko in Moscow.

Mijatovic said this today in Kyiv at the meeting with activists of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), answering the question of NUJU Secretary, Ukrinform Director General Oleksandr Kharchenko.

According to her, "a lot of people are engaged in this issue, it is constantly monitored, but the problem is very complicated and delicate."

Mijatovic added that she maintained the constant contact with the Russian high-ranking officials. "The main thing now is to ensure his [Roman Sushchenko’s] safety, provide legal aid, and give the consul an opportunity to visit and speak with him,” the OSCE representative said.

Mijatovic also noted there was a need to make every effort to release Sushchenko.
