On November 17, 2016, the only Ukrainian research vessel Iskatel is setting out on a voyage to prospect for crude oil and natural gas in the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea, the Ukrainian State Service for Geology and Mineral Resources reports.

“The sailing direction provides for exploratory and detailed oil and gas prospecting seismic and geochemical operations within the Kiliya-Snake [Kiliisko-Zmiinyi] bench and the Krylovskyi trough. The exploration area is the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea,” the report states.

The Iskatel vessel is resuming marine geological and geophysical research operations after a three-year break.

According to the Ukrainian State Service for Geology and Mineral Resources, the southern part of the country is the least investigated and the most promising area, and just 4% of the Black Sea shelf has been explored.
