Ukraine, Japan can set example of nuclear phase-out – ex-PM of Japan
94th Prime Minister of Japan Naoto Kan stated this at the press conference at the Ukrinform news agency.
"Before the accident happened, I had always thought that such accidents were not possible in such a high-tech country as Japan. I changed my mind radically after the Fukushima accident. I am fully confident that the era of nuclear energy is over," Kan said.
According to him, the Chernobyl disaster should make Ukraine search for other options in the energy sector.
"Ukraine has great potential for transition to alternative energy sources," he said, noting that Ukraine has ample opportunity to develop safe energy due to the large territory and natural resources.
In his turn, expert of the National Ecological Centre Oleksiy Pasiuk noted that currently Ukraine faced two main issues in the field of nuclear energy: safety of the nuclear power plants and dependence on nuclear fuel supplies for them from Russia, as well as the issue of equipment, documentation, and so on.
The use of renewable energy sources in Ukraine, according to the expert, is one of the ways to solve the problem of energy independence.
